Charles William Linge was born in Thetford (Thetford Q2-1897 4B:383) son of Charles William and Ellen LINGE(née BROWN).

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Greenland Cottages, Culford with his father Charles W LINGE [29] warrener/gamekeeper born Thetford; his mother Ellen [30] born Thetford and sister Ethel M [5] born Elveden.

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at Seven Hills, Ingham with his parents and sister Ethel. So far the only documentary evidence linking him with Icklingham is his obituary below, albeit his sister was born there..


He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
He died at No 14 Stationary Hospital, Wimereux. Below is the explanation.

The Bury Free Press of 17th April 1915 reported:-
ICKLINGHAM - OBITUARY _ We have to record with the deepest regret the death of a most promising young soldier from this village, Lc-Corpl.C.W.Linge, of the 3rd Battn, Suffolk Regt., who, after serving some weeks in the trenches, succumbed to the after effects of an attack of measles on the 12th inst.,in the No.14 Stationary Hospital at Boulogne. The deceased has deservedly a high place on our Roll of Honour, as he was among the first to enlist from this village, and was of exemplary character. Sincere sympathy is felt for his parents, who are living in the village.

Charles Linge is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemtery, grave 1:E:26A
and is commemorated on the Elveden war memorial in the church there.
